Peak Season Meets Peak Harvest
Vermont's fall foliage season (late September through mid-October) draws millions of visitors to the Green Mountains for some of the most spectacular autumn color in the world. What most visitors do not realize is that this period also coincides with outdoor cannabis harvest season.
For Vermont's craft cultivators — 74% of whom hold small-scale Tier 1 licenses — September and October are the busiest months of the year. Outdoor grows are cut, hung to dry, and cured during the same weeks that Route 100 and Route 7 fill with leaf-peeping tourists. Dispensary shelves begin to fill with fresh harvest product just as tourism peaks.
The CannaTrail and Foliage Drives
CRAV's CannaTrail Passport program is specifically designed to complement foliage tourism. The 23 participating dispensaries are spread along Vermont's most popular scenic driving routes:
- Route 100: Vermont's scenic spine runs north-south through the Green Mountains, passing through Wilmington, Weston, Waterbury, and Stowe. Multiple CannaTrail dispensaries line this corridor.
- Route 7: The western corridor from Bennington through Manchester, Middlebury, and Burlington passes through some of Vermont's most accessible dispensary clusters.
- Northeast Kingdom: The remote northeastern corner of Vermont offers the most dramatic foliage and the least crowded roads. Dispensaries in St. Johnsbury and surrounding towns serve this region.
A fall foliage drive that would otherwise consist of scenic overlooks and covered bridge photo stops can now include dispensary visits, each offering regionally distinct craft cannabis from local cultivators.
Lodging During Peak Season
Fall foliage is Vermont's highest-demand lodging season. 420-friendly vacation rentals book early, particularly in popular corridors:
- Book early: 420-friendly listings on Airbnb and VRBO in popular foliage areas (Stowe, Woodstock, Manchester, Burlington) fill weeks in advance during peak season.
- Consider less-traveled areas: The Northeast Kingdom and upper Connecticut River valley offer equally stunning foliage with more lodging availability and less competition for 420-friendly properties.
- Layla's Riverside Lodge: Offers 420-friendly packages year-round, including during foliage season. Book well in advance.
Consumption Reminders for Foliage Visitors
The same rules that apply year-round are especially important during foliage season, when Vermont's roads and public spaces are at their busiest:
- Private property only: Scenic overlooks, covered bridges, state parks, and town greens are all public spaces where cannabis consumption is prohibited.
- No social consumption venues: Vermont has no cannabis lounges or legal on-site consumption spaces. Your 420-friendly rental is your consumption space.
- DUI laws apply: Cannabis impairment is treated the same as alcohol under Vermont's DUI laws. With leaf-peeping traffic and winding mountain roads, this is especially critical during foliage season.
Late September through October is when Vermont's outdoor cannabis harvest hits dispensary shelves. If you time your foliage trip for mid-to-late October, you will find the freshest locally grown flower of the year — the cannabis equivalent of apple-picking season.
